Vega Tubaphone#3
WORKPAGE

Orig 5 string neck
Mahogany #3

Broken Peghead ear
Repair and refinish peghead

Original attempt at repair was crudely done, and made from Maple
I broke it off easily and it will not be re-used

They also missed badly, on repositioning the tuner hole

As you can see it is low, and inboard

And way too wide.
It is painted on the surface to match the pearwood overlay but has no thickness

The orig overlay is thick, and I will recycle another of its kind.

This later model Tubby has the same thickness Pearwood.
I can scarf a piece off the bottom
It why you throw nothing away..

And I will cut a block from this Mahogany board to try and emulate the grain, which is swirling, barely seen

The straight grain will be on the side of the peghead

Angle cut to ensure grain matches as best as possible

roughed in.
Now to cu t a "D shaped mahogany dowel to finish it off
The flat to flat will get this hole plugged as good as I think necessary

Ready to drive the d plug in

After flat sanding
Ready to reposition hole

Reamed and slightly countersunk and the others
You can see clearly the repair will be 80 percent covered by tuner back

On the front, I will razor cut this  pearwood edge flat

Now that is a beautiful thing
RECYCLE!

Back to profile and reamed thru the front
You can see that the pearwood matches well enough to the sanded original side

Time to stain the edges back in

Starting the shading on the slightly lighter repair section
I will sand the overspray each time I spray the edge until I catch up visually

Dyed, and first coat of sealer.
Edge profile complete
You can see the other top tuner hole was already slightly larger from a modification
I will either bush that in brass or we will ream for whatever Leo wants on her.

Adding final clear coats
I will #oooo steel wool it all to make it look satin again

A little honey amber wash to yellow up the inlay, bringing back a little patina

I will place the brass tubing splints top and bottom of the tuner holes
The will go into the peghead and will act as rebar, to insure stability.
The other side will get them as well.

1 over and one under, drilled in  far enough to get a good spanning.

Recessed into the ear, this will fill with Mahog dust and I will continue the finish
I will not strip the neck, just a few protective coats added, with the majority up around the peghead

Finish completed and drilled for modern small shaft Planetary gears
I'll put 4 vintage buttons on them

A little 0000 Steel wool to knock the new look to satin.
Ill pull th tunas and  hand polish once more then wax

OK, thats it.

Frets cleaned and dressed, FB steel wooled and buffed, shes going to head back home tomorrow.
This will be a decent looking repair job now and a little more correct than before.
Thanks for watching,
Vinnie
